Brown is the colour the Chesterfield was born in, a deep-buttoned brown hide with brass studs is what a Chesterfield meant in the 1700s, and for most people it still is. It hides the marks of family life better than any other colour, goes with almost every wall and floor, and looks better at ten years old than on delivery day.

Florence Mocha and Castagna, Dune Coffee and Hazel, Cracked Wax Espresso. A sealed top coat and an even colour, so spills sit on the surface and the shade stays put. Florence is the smoothest, Dune has a soft distressed look, and Cracked Wax lightens a touch where it stretches. Children, dogs or a busy hallway? Start here.
Distressed and warm
Antique Dark Brown, Old English Dark Brown, Malt and Saddle, Saloon Whiskey and Chaps, Vintage Truffle. The Chesterfield everyone pictures. Antique leathers are hand rubbed-off for an aged, two-tone finish; Old English is a waxy pull-up that crackles and lightens with use; Saloon is milled for a lived-in feel. The browns for a study, a bar or a barn conversion.
Aniline and natural
Vesuvio Espresso, Legacy Dark Caramel and Antique Whisky, Austen Umber, Sable and Bourbon. Dyed right through with nothing on the surface, so every mark and scar in the hide shows. Vesuvio is a Grade A fully aniline leather, Legacy and Austen are buttery pull-ups. The most beautiful browns we sell, and not our first suggestion if there’s a dog.

Keeping Your Leather Beautiful

Dust and wipe
A soft, dry cloth once a week. On sealed browns, a damp cloth wrung nearly dry lifts most marks.

Blot spills
Straight away, with a dry cloth. No detergents, polishes, waxes or solvents; they strip the finish.

Keep it away from heat and sun
Not beside a radiator or fire, and out of strong sunlight, which lightens aniline and semi-aniline browns over time.

Feed it now and then
A leather conditioner two or three times a year keeps it supple. Our cleaning kits are matched to your leather; ask when you order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which brown should I choose?
Start with how you live, then the shade. Sealed (Florence, Dune, Cracked Wax) for children and pets; distressed (Antique, Old English, Saloon) for the classic look; aniline (Vesuvio, Legacy, Austen) for the softest hide, if you don’t mind it showing its age.
Will brown leather fade or change colour?
A sealed brown stays as it is. Pull-up and aniline browns lighten where they’re handled and where the sun reaches; that’s the patina people buy them for. Out of strong sunlight the change is gentle and even.
Is a brown Chesterfield sofa good with children and pets?
Brown is the most forgiving colour we make, and on a sealed leather close to bombproof: scratches don’t show, spills wipe off, and it doesn’t hold smells the way fabric does. We’d steer you away from Vesuvio if there’s a dog.
Which one should I go with Dark brown or tan?
Dark brown is the more traditional and forgiving; it settles into a room and hides marks. A tan Chesterfield sofa is lighter, warmer and more of a feature, and shows its patina faster. Saddle or whisky splits the difference.
What goes with a brown Chesterfield sofa?
Almost everything. Green and blue walls make it richer, white and grey sharper, and any wooden floor works. Add a leather Chesterfield chair in the same hide and the room is done.
Can I match a chair or footstool later?
Yes. Order from the same range and shade, and because we keep a record of every hide we cut, a later piece can be matched closely even years on.
