Grey velvet is the colour that took Chesterfield out of the study and into the family room. It keeps the deep-buttoned back, the rolled arms and the studs and drops the formality a grey sofa asks nothing of the walls, floor or cushions, which is why it’s the velvet we’re asked for most.

Amalfi Velvet
Steel Grey, Cobblestone, Stone, Mushroom, Whisper. A smooth, matt pile that tests to 60,000 rubs, so it’s our hardest-wearing velvet and the one for a busy room. Steel Grey and Cobblestone are the true greys; Stone and Mushroom warm towards taupe, Whisper is the palest.
Vintage Velvet
Asphalt, Flint, Marble, Dusk. A denser pile with a subtly mottled, chalky finish, so the greys look gently lived-in from day one. That finish hides pressure marks better than a plain velvet and the easy-clean coating holds most water-based spills on the surface until you get there.
Omega Velvet
Yorkstone, Pitch. Linwood’s Italian-woven velvet, for the deepest colour. Yorkstone is a warm, stony grey; Pitch is close to black. Stain-resistant, inherently flame-retardant and woven with 28% recycled content.

Keeping Your Velvet Beautiful

Vacuum gently
Once a week, with the soft brush attachment, working with the pile, before dust and crumbs settle.

Blot spills quickly
A clean, dry cloth, straight away. Blot, don’t rub and leave household cleaners and solvents in the cupboard.

Brush the pile
Pressure marks where people sit are normal; the pile leans and catches the light differently. Your hand or a soft clothes brush brings it back and on a mid grey you’ll rarely notice.

Avoid direct sunlight
Strong sunlight fades any fabric in time and a pale grey will yellow slightly by a south-facing window. Turn and plump loose seat cushions every few weeks while you’re at it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which grey should I choose?
Warm or cool first, then depth. Stone, Mushroom and Yorkstone have a brown undertone and suit wooden floors and cream walls; Steel Grey and others. Then pale (Whisper, Marble) for light, dark (Asphalt, Pitch) for drama, or the middle (Cobblestone, Flint) if you want it to disappear into the room.
Is grey velvet cold or boring?
Not in velvet. The pile gives grey a warmth and movement a flat weave doesn’t and the buttoning does the rest. If a cool grey feels clinical, choose a warm one and add bronze studs rather than chrome.
Does grey velvet show marks?
Less than almost any other colour. Mid greys hide crumbs, pet hair and pressure marks; pale greys show pile marks more and dark greys show pale hair. Vintage Velvet’s mottled finish hides the most.
Grey velvet or grey leather?
Velvet is warmer to sit on in winter, softer and starts at a lower price. A grey leather Chesterfield sofa in Dune Grey, Saloon Fossil or Florence Silver Grey wipes clean and ages into a patina. A velvet sofa with a leather chair works because the buttoning and studs match.
