Interiors Trends and Tips

Interiors Focus: Nautical Decor

Christmas and the freezing cold run up to December 25 already seems an age ago, don’t they? With that in mind, we think it’s a-OK to be looking forward to spring days and sunny trips to the beach already. It’s the reason we’ve put together this very post, actually. We figured the slighter lighter evenings are reason enough to start planning ahead and dreaming of bright and breezy day trips, and not-too-distant summer holidays.

And if you change your home decor with the seasons, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with heading to Pinterest and putting together a summer-inspired style mood board.

Beautifully Beachy

We’ve been picking out our favourite Pinterest photos, including this one (below) of a gorgeous, nautical-inspired living room. It comes via this site and it’s been responsible for more than a little bit of office-based day dreaming. I mean, doesn’t it just remind you of a beautiful beach house, or the decor you’d expect to find in one of those pretty Brighton wooden huts near the sea?

The great thing about nautical-inspired decor is it’s so easy to incorporate into your current style, and home in general. Have a leisurely browse in most interiors shops and you’re bound to spot a trinket or two which effortlessly slots into this trend. Think mini ships with huge linen sails, wooden pieces, and knick knacks made from rustic-looking twine or rope.

The nautical trend is about pairing different textures and shades to create a clean, fresh-looking room. Start with a blank canvas, a fresh white or pale blue wall and work from there. If you’re struggling on colours, grab a few swatch pots from your local DIY shop, paint a good sized brush-stroke of each on a wall you’re looking to update and see how the shades grow on you.

Start Small

We love the nautical-style candles (pictured above), which were shared on Pinterest via the blog Whimsical Raindrop Cottage. Trinkets like this offer an easier way to nod to the trend without going all-out nautical. Start small and work your way up. See how different textures, fabrics and shades look and add more as you find them. Try thrift shops for unique finds; you can restore old, worn out pieces (if you’re handy enough with a paint brush) for a casual look.

And don’t forget, if you’re looking for a Chesterfield sofa in a more casual, comfortable fabric, we can make you one in almost anything. From linen to velvet, we can create the sofa of your dreams to easily slot into a conservatory, chill out room or lounge.

What are your thoughts on this trend? Are you a fan? Or is it a little too casual for your taste?
